Staying Safe Around Snakes While Bush Camping

Queensland’s bushland is home to a variety of wildlife, including snakes. While most snakes prefer to avoid humans, it’s important to be aware and take precautions to stay safe during your camping trip. Here’s what you need to know.

Snake Awareness & Prevention

  • Snakes are most active in warmer months (spring & summer).
  • Wear closed-toe shoes and loose fiting long pants when walking through tall grass or bushland.
  • Stick to marked trails and avoid stepping over logs or rocks without checking first.
  • Keep your campsite tidy— food scraps attract mice and snakes will soon follow.

avoid snakes when bush camping

⚠️ What to Do If You See a Snake

  • Stay calm and back away slowly—never try to touch or provoke a snake.
  • Give the snake space to move away on its own.
  • Keep pets and children close to avoid accidental encounters.
  • Most snakes in Queensland are non-aggressive and will not attack unless threatened.

First Aid for Snake Bites

  • Stay as still as possible to slow the spread of venom.
  • Apply a pressure bandage firmly around the affected limb, starting from below the bite and working upwards.
  • Do not wash the bite—venom traces help medical professionals identify the snake.
  • Seek medical help immediately—call Triple Zero (000) or get to the nearest hospital.

Visit Queensland Health for updated information regarding Snake Bites

Snakes are an important part of the ecosystem and generally avoid human contact. By staying aware and following these simple precautions, you can safely enjoy your bush camping adventure in Queensland.
